Santo Antonio do Ica
Brazil
A relaxing and very, very slow journey on a cargo boat sailing from Manaus to Tabatinga, the Brazilian city right next to Leticia, Colombia.
Our ship was slower than most due to its nature: instead of simply transporting goods, it was loaded with tons of random items (ranging from dog food to shoes, and even fresh meat) and sometimes spent more than ten hours at each stop trying to sell as much of it as possible to local merchants.
In a way, one could say this gave me more time to contemplate the surroundings. But in all honesty, when nothing’s moving and the sun heats the roof to nearly 40 °C, you do get bored pretty fast 😂
The cruise itself was deeply enjoyable, from the bar next to the small football field where locals played every evening, to the front of the ship where one could sit and enjoy coffee while looking at the water from above, or even the loud dining room, right above the engines, which drowned out any kind of human noise in a deep, reassuring roar 😌
