Kilkis
Greece
The city feels like time moves at a slower pace here. Life is unhurried, with a simple, rural rhythm. There are two small plazas where locals gather, surrounded by cafés and family-run restaurants, all reasonably priced and without any sense of pretension.
A friend invited me for coffee at the café where she works. We sat outside while the afternoon sun lit the square, watching neighbours greet each other and children play in the fountain. The next morning, she took me to a natural cave at the top of a nearby hill, a quiet and undisturbed spot. We got there on her motorcycle, riding through the warm countryside that opened up around us like a series of postcards.
We also made a spontaneous stop for karting, which turned out to be fun and quite affordable at about sixteen bucks, a good deal compared to home. This small city is a peaceful place where you can take your time and enjoy the days without feeling rushed.
