Plovdiv
Bulgaria
Scattered throughout Plovdiv are numerous Roman ruins, Orthodox churches, and mosques. This city reminds me somewhat of Sarajevo; they share a certain ambience that I find difficult to capture fully in words.
Several churches rise above the old town, perched on the hills that punctuate the skyline. One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres I have ever seen flanks the main hill, blending the aesthetics of Ancient Rome with modern concert infrastructure and equipment.
At that point, I am unaware of this yet, but my plan to reach Bucharest by the evening of the 29th is about to backfire entirely. We will see how and why in Stara Zamora.
