Gevgelija
North Macedonia
Why choose this small, forgotten roadside town, one might wonder?
There are no remarkable monuments, landmarks, or landscapes to distinguish it, and yet it felt like the right place to pause. After a thirty‑minute drive with a friend’s father to the border, the evening was already settling in, and the idea of reaching Skopje that night had grown increasingly unrealistic.
I spent the evening enjoying succulent peaches, cosy cafés, and warm pitas along the town’s main street, while preparing for the train I hoped to catch in the early morning. It departs at 4:40 a.m. from the central station. I can only hope the journey proves worth the wait. A simpler solution from Kilkis would have been to return to Thessaloniki and take a direct bus to Skopje, but this path feels more scenic, and I believe I made the right choice.
