Niš
Serbia
Niš was not exactly the highlight of my trip, as I fell ill shortly after arriving. It is, however, a charming town, offering reasonably priced food and drinks, a large Ottoman fortress with well-preserved military barracks, and an intriguing underground Soviet-era shopping mall that tunnels beneath the main square and its surrounding streets.
I spent most of my time either in bed or observing passers-by from the terrace of a café, which hardly makes me the ideal tour guide should I ever return with company.
One detail that caught my attention was the frequent sight of military planes and helicopters flying over the city centre… perhaps there is a nearby base? I’ll take a look once I recover fully.
